RISING STARS

Applicants must be 14-18 and in or entering high school

Are you looking for a fun and exciting summer volunteer experience where you can learn new skills, make new friends, and go behind the scenes of a world-class museum? Then OMSI's youth volunteer training program, Rising Stars, is for you!

The Rising Stars program is offered during the summer for youth ages 14 to 18. There are two sessions of OMSI's Rising Stars program, mid-June through July and mid-July through August. Each session is a six-week, service-learning program that combines training and hands-on volunteer experience. You'll learn about public speaking, teaching and customer service, present interactive science demonstrations for OMSI visitors, and develop your own original science demonstration. You'll also gain valuable work experience to build your resumé, and have the opportunity to meet school community service requirements while learning more about science. You will earn up to 90 hours of volunteer service, and after completing the Rising Stars program, you may have the opportunity to stay on at OMSI as a regular volunteer!

Rising Stars has a program fee of $250; need-based scholarships are available.

We are currently accepting applications for the Summer 2010 Rising Stars program.  The application deadline is May 1, and interviews will be conducted starting in April.  The Rising Stars program fills quickly, so please apply early.

VISITOR SERVICES VOLUNTEERS

Applicants must be 14 or older.

Visitor Services volunteers welcome visitors to OMSI and provide them with friendly and helpful service as they enter the museum's exhibit halls.  Visitor Services volunteers learn and practice excellent customer service skills and help guests navigate the museum.

Successful applicants must be able to commit to volunteering at least two four-hour shifts per month for at least nine months.  Applications are accepted year-round for this position.

MUSEUM EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS

Applicants must be 16 or older.

Museum Education volunteers help visitors explore and learn in one of OMSI's interactive exhibit halls or labs:  Early Childhood Education, Earth Science, Life Science, Turbine Hall (Chemistry, Physical Science and Technology), and Featured Exhibits.

Successful applicants must be able to commit to volunteering at least two four-hour shifts per month for at least nine months.  Applications for these positions are accepted between June and January for school year placements.  Between February and May, youth interested in Museum Education should apply to the summer Rising Stars program.

MUSEUM EDUCATION INTERNS

Applicants must be 14 or older and in high school.

Museum Education Interns assist staff in the functioning of an exhibit hall or lab.  These highly selective positions have three roles:  (1) facilitate museum visitors' learning experiences with informal interactions, demonstrations, and lab activities; (2) assist with maintenance of the labs; and (3) complete a project to be determined by the intern and their supervisor.  These positions are competitive and designed for high school students desiring an in-depth experience at OMSI.

Successful applicants must be able to commit to volunteering for a weekly shift of at least four hours for the length of a semester (September through December or January through May).  There are a limited number of Museum Education Intern positions; opportunities may not always be available.  This program is full for Spring 2010.

SCIENCE CLASSES VOLUNTEERS

Applicants must be 14-18 and in or entering high school.

Science Classes volunteers assist with supervision and class activities in OMSI's myriad of summer science class offerings.  Science Classes volunteers learn science and open young minds to scientific inquiry by helping class participants investigate, invent, discover, and experiment.

Applicants must be able to give at least three full weeks to the program during the summer at one of several locations in the Portland area.  Applications are accepted between February and May for this position.
